Embu alcohol sellers oppose bill to curb second generation liquor

Liquor dealers in Embu County have opposed the proposed Master Bill that seeks to control the sale of alcohol and drinks within 11 counties in Mt. Kenya region.

The traders, led by their chairman Ireri Ndong’ong’i, under the umbrella of the Embu County Liquor Dealers Association said that the Bill did not favour them contrary to what their leaders say.

“The move to have a single Bill passed by 11 counties is a brilliant idea but there is a need for public participation,” he said.

At the same time, they traders called on the Embu County Assembly not to pass the Bill when tabled before it on April 14th until the interest of all players in the area are taken into consideration.

The Bill comes at a time the country is struggling with the adverse effects of illicit brew and second generation alcohol.

Last week, Laikipia County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mariru announced that the county plans to introduce a Ksh 10 million fine on anyone found manufacturing illicit liquor in the county.
