Embu coffee farmers oppose central depository unit

Coffee farmers from Embu County have sent their petition to Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mr Willy Bett to consider reviewing the implementation of a central depository unit for Sacco members.

The farmers from the 24 coffee cooperative societies in Embu County claimed that some recommendations suggested by a task force set up by President Uhuru Kenyatta to improve the livelihoods of farmers had several downsides and could result into countless loses in the Agriculture sector.

Embu District Coffee Union Chairman John Maruku said the Central Depository unit included in the report would result in the collapse of Saccos.

Maruku said: “The task force report has both good and unappealing suggestions therefore we are requesting for its review, especially on the issue concerning implementation of central depository system units as it could affect the 110,000 members from the 24 Saccos.”

He further added that the farmers already have accounts with Saccos of their choice hence urging them to open other accounts with the central depository is uncalled for.

The coffee farmers appealed to Agriculture CS Willy Bett to consider reviewing the task force report as several groups had raised concerns over the issue.
