Embu County to rehabilitate alcoholic teachers

Teachers Service Commission Embu County Director, Janet Anyango has revealed that they have officially began a crackdown on alcoholic teachers with the aim of rehabilitating them.

Anyango noted that a number of teachers in the county have been heading straight to bars soon after receiving their monthly stipends, only to reappear back to class when the funds aredepleted.

“Once they get their salary, they go out drinking and many of them never remember to come back until the money is finished. Quite a number of our teachers are becoming a thorn in the flesh to our principals, and sometimes when we make a follow up the behavior is not even normal, and we realise these teachers are doing drugs,” she said.

The Director added that this behavior was affecting the teachers’ output in class, and they needed urgent help as they may pose a threat to learners.

She called upon school heads to hand over such teachers to the commission for them to be taken for rehabilitation in order to be allowed back to the classrooms.

“So I want to appeal to you, if we have such teachers, let us bring their names forwards so that we can help them. These teachers are sick, the moment you become addicted, you are now sick. If you can talk to them, let them agree to come to rehab,” added Anyango.

The Director further added that the commission’s well being department was ready to facilitate rehabilitation programs for such teachers to be helped and get back to class to do “a good job.”
