Embu health workers defy warning, continue with strike

The County Government of Embu has warned its striking health workers that they risk loosing their jobs if they do not resume work.

The health workers however ignored the warning and vowed to continue with their strike until their grievances are heard.

Embu County health workers downed their tools last week citing lack of promotions and poor working conditions, paralyzing health services across the county.

The strike, that is now in its 12th day, also saw patients turned away from public health facilities and forced to seek treatment in private hospitals.

“The county government should sit down with the doctors and nurses in order to find a solution to this problem because we are suffering,” one of the patients lamented.

Embu County Government Secretary Raymond Kinyua pleaded with the striking health workers to resume their duties or be sacked, noting that there are many qualified doctors and nurses in the county to replace them.

“We have so many qualified people out there who are looking for jobs, I am pleading with the health workers to resume work from tomorrow (Wednesday),” he stressed.

Embu leaders on the other hand urged the county government to dialogue with the striking health workers so as to find a lasting solution to the stalemate that has brought untold suffering to the residents.
