Embu leaders in peace meet ahead of August 8 poll campaigns

Leaders drawn from the larger Embu region have vowed to maintain peace and preach unity during the electioneering period and ahead of the August 8 General Election.

Speaking at Catholic Prayer House in Embu town during a consultative meeting, the leaders warned the political class that they risk losing their support should they (aspirants) engage in politics of hate and campaigning without a clear development agenda.

Led by the Chairman of the Bishop and Pastors Association, Silvano Nyaga, the leaders said they will not spare any leader who preaches division and hatred among the electorate during this political period.

“Leaders should know that national integration is the cornerstone of any democracy and politicians who will be caught using abusive and vulgar language to intimidate their political competitors will be dealt with accordingly,” warned Mr Nyaga.

Nyaga said that in the past elections, some leaders were basing their politics on tribal lines causing divisions among the Embu residents for political gain.

“The church and community elders will respect every candidate and give them an opportunity to express their political ideologies in forums without favoritism or discrimination but we will not impose a candidate on the electorate,” added Mr Nyaga.

He said Embu County will be best served when church leaders and community elders are involved in the decision making process in Embu County including resource allocation, development and conflict resolution.

Political leaders led by Embu senator Lenny Kivuti said such meetings where all stakeholders meet to chart the way forward were important for growth and development in the county.
