Embu man jailed for smoking bhang

A 28-year-old man stunned an Embu Court after admitting to smoking illegal cannabis sativa (bhang) in a bid to help him dig pit latrines effectively.

Joseph Muriithi Kathuri pleaded guilty to being found in possession of 100 grams of cannabis sativa with an estimated street value of Ksh 400 at Kathunguri village in Embu North Sub County.

Kathuri, who was appearing before Embu Resident Magistrate, Jean Ndeng’eri, told the court that he earns a living from digging pit latrines adding that smoking the illicit drug aided him in his work.

The court, however, fined him Ksh 30,000 or a five-month jail term.

Kathuri, who was unable to raise the cash, was thereafter escorted to the Embu G.K Prison to serve his sentence.
