Embu man jailed for stealing coffee berries worth Ksh.600

An Embu man has been sentenced to one year in jail with an option of paying a Ksh. 20,000 fine for stealing coffee berries.

Stephen Kariuki Ndwigah was found guilty of stealing 5 kilograms of coffee berries worth Ksh. 600.

The court was told that the 22-year-old stole the berries from his neighbor’s farm in Kibugu village, Embu .

Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Tony Kwambia, Ndwigah pleaded guilty.

The owner of the farm, Njeru, and his wife had found the accused picking their coffee and called him out.

He however took off, leaving his loot inside a nylon bag.

The couple took the coffee berries and reported the matter at Kibugu Police Station; a manhunt for the accused was launched.

He was arrested and charges leveled against him.

On Tuesday, the Magistrate said the accused seemed unremorseful and will serve one year in jail or pay the Ksh.20,000 fine.
