Embu: Man killed by cousins over lost phone

A 30-year-old man died on Wednesday after he was brutally tortured by his cousins in Kathita village, Embu County.

According to Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCIO) superintendent George Etyang, the deceased’s body was discovered in the wee hours of the morning by a local who informed the police.

Mr Etyang told Citizen Digital that the deceased, identified as Samuel Gichovi and his cousin Elijah Muchangi were tortured over the disappearance of a phone from Rwamba Gichugu’s home, their other cousin.

He added that the torturers used hot metal bars to extract information from the two before the deceased succumbed to death.

The sleuth further said that Ms. Gichugu has since been arrested and that the police have launched investigations into the matter.

“We are investigating the incident where a man by the name Samuel Gichovi aged 30 was tortured by his kinsmen. We are trying to establish the truth. We have already arrested one lady who is in custody and we are pursuing the other two kinsmen involved in the incident,” said Mr. Etyang.

Mr. Muchangi, who survived the ordeal said they were captured by three men who were allegedly under instructions from Ms. Gichugu to torture him and the deceased to give information on the phone’s disappearance.

“I was accosted at my home at around 3pm. I was frogmarched and taken to where Gichovi was being held. They tortured us using hot metal bars but released me. They refused to let Gichovi go,” said Mr. Muchangi.

Caroline Wawira, the deceased’s sister said her brother was accosted while having an afternoon nap.

She said that they took him away and that the family found him dead when the police were called.
