Embu medics on the spot for being drunk at work

Residents of Embu town have raised concerns over what they termed as an alarming increase in cases where medical personnel in public hospitals are allegedly attending to patients while drunk.

These fresh claims come barely two days after the Embu County Assembly launched investigations into yet another set of claims that health officers were involved in theft of government drugs and selling them to private run chemists.

Speaking to the media, Kirimari MCA Morris Nyaga alias Collo, threatened to mobilize residents to close down all chemists involved in the sale of the allegedly stolen medicine from government facilities.

“The health sector is consuming  Ksh. 1.7 billion of the county budget and health services ought to be impeccably good in all government hospitals in Embu County.A lot of money has been pumped in Embu level 5 hospital and residents deserve better health services,” said Nyaga.

Christine Wanja, a resident, cautioned doctors against attending to patients while drunk saying that residents  depend on them.

While condemning the theft in county hospital pharmacies, Wanja noted that many residents are poor and depend on government drugs which are affordable to many compared to those sold at private chemists.

“There is no need to have all those modern equipment yet people are forced to seek health services such as tests in private laboratories in Embu town,” decried Peter Maina, Boda Boda  Association chair.

Residents now fear that thousands of patients in Embu County risk losing their lives in the hands of alcohol intoxicated doctors and nurses.
