Embu: Police officer accused of sexually harassing girl, 15, in police cell

A police constable attached to Manyatta police station was on Tuesday arraigned in an Embu court facing charges of sexually harassing a 15-year-old girl who had been booked in one of the cells.

According to the charge sheet, Police Constable Lobolia Nakua Tobias was accused of taking advantage of his position as a police officer at Manyatta police station and sexually assaulted the minor at the station which he was attached.

The officer is said to have kept visiting the cell where the complainer, a Form Two student at Karoti Girls was being held despite her persistent cries.

In the January 16 incident, the girl is said to have sought refuge at the police station after quarreling with her mother who then chased her with a kitchen knife and was booked in the police station as a child in need of care.

It is at this point that the officer realised that the other remanded persons had left the cell and took advantage by pushing the girl against the wall and sexually assaulted her.

Manyatta OCS, Samson Mukura carried out investigations and an identification parade was conducted where the girl was able to positively identify her attacker.

Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Tony Kwambai, the accused however denied the charges and was released on a Ksh.50,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount or cash bail of Ksh.35,000.

A pre-trial date was set for February 6, 2019.
