Embu residents decry exorbitant water bills

Residents of Mufu Village in Runyenjes, Embu County on Thursday took to the street to protest what they perceive as exorbitant water bills.

The residents complained that their water bills shot up suddenly without explanation over a few days.

Renson Mugo, a resident, was shocked to find that his September bill had shot up from Ksh2000 to Ksh32,290 for domestic water use in a span of two months, despite him making partial payments from the original bill that was Ksh4290.

Ephantus Mugo on the other hand opted for disconnection since he could not manage to raise the Ksh6000 for his water bill.

Led by Embu MCA Mugo Kanjogu, Mufu residents held an urgent consultative meeting to address the issue to find a lasting solution to the water problem.

Mugo noted that the management of Kyeni Water and Sanitation Company had become a business run by individuals, despite it being a public entity.

He called upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) board to investigate on the company’s activities and its directors.

Mugo also questioned the procurement procedure for the water meters, which he claimed were faulty and the reason behind the exaggerated meter readings and huge bills.

“Mufu residents have been questioning the modalities used to calculate their water bills. The residents want the management of Kyeni Water and Sanitation Company disbanded,” he said.

Meanwhile, the residents have vowed to disconnect their water meters to prevent running even higher bills this month.
