Embu teacher fined Ksh 5000 for calling mother a prostitute

A primary school teacher in Embu West was on Friday, February 17 fined Ksh 5,000 or face a six month imprisonment after pleading guilty to creating a disturbance by insulting his mother by calling her a prostitute.

Edwin Macharia Kariuki, who teaches at St Peters Kiandundu, admitted to committing the offense that had the potential of causing a breach of peace at their home in Kiandundu village, before Senior Resident Magistrate, Samuel Mutai.

On the material day, Kariuki had arrived home and found his mother, Rosemary Kariuki, talking to a neighbour who had come to ask for some assistance, a thing that incensed Kariuki.

It is then that Kariuki sought the attention of his mother seeking to find out why she was talking to the neighbor but she ignored him and locked the door.

He then started banging at the door and when his mother stayed put, he started hurling insults at her, at one point calling her ‘malaya‘ (a prostitute).

It is then that his father arrived and reported the matter to Itabua Police Station, leading to the arrest on January 29 this year.

In mitigation, Kariuki called for leniency saying his career as a teacher would suffer if he was jailed.

He said he would ensure they were reconciled with his parents to ensure cohesive co-existence.

But the Magistrate noted that the offence was serious as it amounted to disrespect to the parents and encouraged Kariuki to mend fences with the parents.
