Embu University students take to the streets, barricade highway

Embu University students took to the streets in protest over alleged proposed fee increment.

On Wednesday, the students claimed that the institution was planning to increase fees from Ksh. 16,000 to  Ksh 48,000.

They further alleged that exam retake fee will also be increased and they will not be able to afford it.

A meeting between the university management and student leaders did not bear fruit but as they failed to agree.

They barricaded the road outside the school entrance and police had to be called in.

The officers used teargas to disperse the students who were reportedly stoning motor vehicles along the Embu-Meru highway and into Kangaru village.

The students are said to have vowed to continue with their demonstrations until their grievances are addressed.
