Employers ordered to release employees no later than 4pm

Kenyan employers have been ordered to release the non-critical or the non-essential services employees not later than 4pm daily.

A gazettte notice by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior of Coordination of National Government Fred Matiang’i said the order was made in respect to the newly imposed 7pm to 5am curfew.

President Uhuru Kenyatta imposed the countrywide curfew of between 7pm and 5am effective Friday, March 27 as part of measures to stem the spread of the coronavirus in the country.

The only persons exempted from the curfew are medical professionals, health workers, critical and essential services providers.

The Critical and Essential Service Providers who will not be affected by the curfew include; Medical Professionals & Health Workers, National Security, Administration and Co-ordination Officers, Public Health and Sanitation officers in the County Governments, Licensed Pharmacies and Drug Stores, Licensed Broadcasters and Media Houses, Kenya Power & Lightening Company Limited.

Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai warned that those found outside their homes within the stipulated 7pm-5am curfew period would be dealt with according to the law.

The only persons exempted from the curfew are medical professionals, health workers, critical and essential services providers.

While explaining the logic behind the night-time curfew, Ministry of Health Director General Patrick Amoth said the move was informed by science.

Speaking to Citizen TV’s Trevor Ombija on Monday evening, Amoth said according to science people socialize more in the evenings, thereby losing the requisite social distancing.

“Curfew time was imposed because it makes scientific sense in that people socialize in evenings, that’s when they lose the sense of social distancing,” Amoth said.

Kenya has so far reported 81 cases of the new coronavirus with the Ministry of Health asking Kenyans to join in the war against the pandemic.
