Envoys advocate for free, fair elections, pledge Ksh8.5 billion

Twenty-five foreign ambassadors and high commissioners from America and various European countries have rooted for free, fair, peaceful, and credible elections in August when Kenyans go to the ballot.

Led by Robert Godec of US and UK High Commissioner Nic Hailey, the foreign envoys are calling for safeguards to be put in place to prevent political violence ahead of anticipated hotly contested poll.

In a joint statement, the diplomats urged national and county governments, political parties, police and all Kenyans to embrace inclusive political dialogue and reject chaos and those perpetrating violence.

The foreign envoys warned that the country risks plunging to ethnic violence if police fail to maintain neutrality and respect human rights and if August polls don’t reflect democratic choices of Kenyans.

They, however, challenged new IEBC chair and commissioners to fast track poll preparations, led by voter register audit and procuring technology, pledging Ksh8.5 billion to the electoral processes.
