Envoys condemn attacks on Judiciary, IEBC

Western envoys in the country have expressed concern over the recent attacks by politicians on the Judiciary and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), saying that it risks undermining the Constitution and rule of law.

In a joint statement sent to newsrooms, the different heads of missions urged leaders to refrain from statements that might incite the public to violence and instead focus on preparing for the repeat poll which ‘must’ be conducted by IEBC in line with the Supreme Court’s order on September 1.

“In recent months Kenya has witnessed an upsurge in fake news, hate speech and ethnic profiling. In addition there have been unfounded attacks on individuals and institutions for instance the Judiciary and the IEBC, while we support the freedom of speech, baseless attacks and lies must stop,” the statement reads.

The diplomats further condemned ‘malicious Judicial capture’ documents doing rounds on social media, saying that this could endanger lives .

“We urge the Kenyan authorities to hold to account those responsible for hate speech and incitement and to ensure the safety and incitement including members of our own mission staff,” read the statement in part.

The envoys re-affirmed their impartiality in the repeat presidential election saying they will continue to work with  IEBC towards ensuring the repeat election is free, fair and credible.

“We and our teams will continue to act with complete impartiality in line with our shared commitment to Kenya’s constitution and its institutions, a successful poll will require goodwill flexibility from leaders and citizens alike, politics is not a matter of life and death.” The statement reads.

The envoys continued to urge Kenyans to maintain peace and respect the constitution in the build up to the repeat presidential election.
