EPZ officer gets 6-year jail term for demanding Ksh.1.6M bribe

A former procurement officer at the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Athi River Machakos County has been sentenced to six years in jail or pay Ksh.1.5 million fine after he was found guilty of soliciting for a bribe.

The accused; Davis Chele Edewa, was charged that in August 2016 he demanded for a Ksh.1.6 million bribe to influence the award of a tender to a contractor, Hezbon Ngugi Kamande, who reported the matter to the EACC.

The anti-graft body laid a trap for the suspect and he was arrested at a hotel Kitengela where he was expecting to meet with the contractor hoping to receive the alleged bribe.

He was charged with the offences of soliciting and receiving a benefit contrary to the law.

The accused was convicted and sentenced by Kajiado Chief Magistrate Susan Shitumbi.
