Escape from jaws of death: Homa Bay man survives hippo attack

A 31-year-old fisherman narrowly escaped death at the jaws of a hippopotamus at Chuowe beach in Karachuonyo Constituency, Homa Bay County.

The survivor, Nelson Ochieng’ Agidho, was rushed to Rakwaro dispensary in critical condition after he was attacked by the hippo while having a short call at his home in Komenya village.

According to the chairman of Chuowe beach, Peter Shikuku, the hippo grabbed Ochieng’, who is also the treasurer of the beach, and tore his thigh before he was rescued and rushed to hospital.

Homa Bay county beach management network chairperson Edward Oremo confirmed that the survivor sustained serious injuries on his thigh before his family members came to his rescue prompting the hippo to disappear.

Mr. Oremo Lamented on the frequent crocodile and hippo attacks in various beaches within Homa Bay County saying in a span of three months three lives had been lost in the hands of aquatic animals.

Oremo is now calling on the Kenya Wildlife Services to intervene and find a permanent solution to the persistent human-wildlife conflict in the region.
