Several families in Kisumu County are staring at displacement after heavy rains witnessed on Wednesday night left hundreds of residents trapped in their homes.

According to a spot check conducted by Citizen Digital, the worst hit area was Nyamasaria in Kolwa East ward where the overflow from River Auji left behind a trail of destruction.

Homes, shops and even petrol stations were – at the time of publishing – still marooned by water with several people stranded.

In Mama Moraa area of Nyamasaria, people were seen wading through the water with calls for emergency response to ensure no life is lost.

In Kibos area of Kisumu East, several houses were also marooned as a result of the rain, with water even penetrating inside most houses.

Most of the flood victims in the various affected areas in Kisumu are yet to be rescued, with looming fear – however – that, even if they are, they may not be able to get the necessary assistance at public hospitals in the county as doctors are still on strike.

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Wednesday warned of rains and thunderstorms in various areas on the Lake Victoria Basin – including Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori etc – until Sunday when sunny intervals will likely be witnessed.
