Europes capitals on heightened alert following London attack

Europe’s capitals on Thursday (March 23) were on high alert following an attack in London which killed three people and injured forty.

British police have arrested seven people in the investigation into the incident, which took place on Wednesday (March 22) when a lone-wolf attacker sped across Westminster Bridge in a car, mowing down pedestrians along the way, then ran through the gates of the nearby parliament building and stabbed a policeman before being shot dead.

In the Belgium capital, the security presence remains high on the streets. Ceremonies to mark the one-year anniversary of the Brussels terror attack were just drawing to a close on Wednesday (March 22) as the London attack was taking place. In the Brussels attack on March 22, 2016, three Islamist militants, all Belgian nationals, blew up bombs at Brussels’ Zaventem Airport and Maelbeek metro station, killing 32 people and wounding hundreds. Students in the city said they were determined to live their lives normally despite the threat of terror attacks.

In Rome, police were in place around the parliament building. Thousands of reinforcements are expected to flood the city in the coming days as the Italian capital prepares to host a European Union summit when the leaders of 27 EU states will be in town, without departing Britain, for a summit that they hope can relaunch the Union in the city where it was founded 60 years earlier.

In Berlin, Germany, police patrolled the cordoned-off areas around the main government buildings, maintaining a strong police presence. The flag outside the British embassy flew at half-mast in sympathy for the victims of the London attack.
