Event managers lose property worth Ksh 100M in UoN riots

Event Managers Association of Kenya says its members lost equipment valued at over 100 million shillings in the Saturday night riots at the University of Nairobi.

The students went on rampage destroying the property as they protested a ban to cook in their hostels.

The students vandalised a tent, stole music systems, public address system and burnt some as they went on the rampage forcing an electoral registration exercise that had been organised by the US embassy and IEBC to be cancelled.

Martin Mulwa of the Events Managers’ Association of Kenya says their interim board is currently meeting and will come with a way forward on the issue.

While confirming the incident on Sunday, the university’s deputy vice chancellor, student academic affairs, Prof Henry Mutoro, says the university had organized for prices at the university cafeteria to be lowered by 25 % making it affordable for the students.

The university says its decision was informed by a warning it received from the Kenya Power on systems overload in the hostels.

11 students who were found cooking had been summoned and their parents called for meetings with the university administration next week.

Security has since been heightened at the campus premise as students are required to produce students ID before entering the university.
