Ex-CS Wario seeks court consent to travel abroad for ‘family, official duties’

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario now wants the court to release his traveling documents to enable him travel to Austria to attend to his sick child and official duties.

In his application filed Thursday, Wario says he has a one-year-old child and needs to attend to the family who he has not seen since he was charged in October this year.

He further adds that he is the sole breadwinner of his family, therefore, urgently needs to travel and attend to them.

He says that the family is yet to settle and learn the language in the country and this is taking a toll on them.

“I was appointed as the Kenyan ambassador to Austria and the permanent Representative to the United Nations which positions requires regular travel to advance Country’s interest and I am unable to carry out that function as my passports are deposited with the court,” reads court documents.

It is his argument that he only learnt of his intended arrest and charge on social media while in Austria and came immediately without organizing his personal and family affairs, adding that he did not hand over or delegate any function of the office.

“I also need to go and make necessary arrangements to delegate any official duties to my staff for the period that I will be away from office as required under section 62 of the Anti-corruption and Economics Crimes Act,” reads the court documents.

Wario further says that he is a holder of two passports and both were deposited in court on October 15, 2018 following court orders.

The matter will be mentioned on Friday.
