Ex-Governor Kideros trial in Ksh.213M graft case begins

The trial of former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero began on Monday at the Milimani Law Courts after High Court judge John Onyingo lifted orders he had issued to bar his trial on Thursday last week.

Kidero and 10 others are facing charges in connection with the loss of Ksh.213 million belonging to Nairobi County when he was in office.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), through Assistant DPP Joseph Riungu, told Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti they are set to prove to the court that the 11 accused persons, seven of whom were senior county officers, fraudulently paid the said public funds for goods and services not supplied and without supporting documents contrary to procurement laws.

Kidero and eight others are accused of collaborating to commit fraud, leading to the loss of Ksh.213,327,300 at the county government between January 16, 2014 and January 25, 2016, where they allegedly confirmed payments to various companies for services not delivered.

Kidero is alleged to have received a total of Ksh.24 million from Lodwar Wholesalers Ltd — Ksh.14 million on August 24 and Ksh.10 million  on September 11, 2014.

Other suspects in the case include former County Secretary Lilian Ndegwa, former Chief Finance Officer Jimmy Mutuku Kiamba, former Finance and Planning minister Gregory Mwakanongo, former head of accounting Stephen Ogago Osiro, acting CFO Luke Mugo and acting head of Treasury Maurice Ochieng Okere.

They are accused of fraudulently paying money to John Githua and Grace Njeri of Lodwar Wholesalers and Ngurumani Traders Limited from the county money for services which were never delivered.

Kidero and his co-accused however deny the charges.
