Ex-Mayor, lawyer Mwangangi shortlisted candidates for IEBC boss post
Former Mombasa Mayor, Taib Ali Taib, and former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), Florence Muoti Mwangangi, are among the five newly shortlisted candidates for the post of the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The five bring to ten the total number of those slated to be interviewed to succeed IEBC chairman Ahmed Issack Hassan at the helm of IEBC.
The IEBC Selection Panel further shortlisted lawyer Tukero ole Kina of Muli & Ole Kina Advocates Co., advocate Wanyonyi Wafula Chebukati of Cootow & Associates Advocates, and Lucas Leperes Naikuni of Naikuni Ngaah & Miencha Co. Advocates.
The five will be interviewed on Monday, December 19 starting 10:00am
They were shortlisted after the selection panel re-advertised the positions saying that information on previously shortlisted candidates as provided by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (IEBC) was insufficient.
However, the Selection Panel, said that the earlier shortlisted candidate will be interviewed on Tuesday, December 20.
They include: Roseline Odhiambo Odede, Kipropo David Malakwen, Margaret Wambui Ngugi Shava, David Mukii Mereka and Dr John Kangu Mutakha.
The shortlisting comes just a day after the opposition Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) said that the outgoing IEBC commissioners must exit the office by December 23 and new ones installed.
CORD has constantly accused the Jubilee administration of delaying the recruitment and appointment of new commissioners to the IEBC, terming it a move to rig the 2017 elections, claims the ruling coalition has rubbished as unfounded.
The Ahmed Issack Hassan-led IEBC has been under sharp criticism from the opposition coalition which has accused the poll body of mismanaging the 2013 elections.
CORD also wants IEBC to stop any tendering and procurement processes until a new commission is constituted to take over. It also wants the voter register scrutinized afresh to ensure a free and fair poll come Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
