Ex-MP to spend weekend in custody over graft

Former Eldoret South Member of Parliament, Peris Simam, her husband Enock Kimeli Simam and four other people will spend the weekend in police custody pending determination of an appeal against offence of economic crime by influencing award of a contract in 2010.

While appearing before Eldoret Chief Magistrate, Wanjiku Cherere, the six were charged with ten counts and fined 25 million shillings or jailed with varying duration depending on number of counts.

The former MP has been fined 10.7 million shillings or face 18 years in jail.

The six wanted to appeal the ruling but the court postponed their plea until Monday, October 10 ordering that they remain in custody until then.

The four accused persons are; Shachile Mikoya Laban, Maluti Pamela Maluti, John Simiyu Khaemba and Wisdom Kimutai.
