Ex-soldier shot dead in botched robbery

An ex-army officer was today (Sunday) morning shot dead at Gatitu trading center in Nyeri County after he was allegedly involved in a robbery at the center.

The man, who is yet to be identified, was reportedly in a gang of five that had robbed the center on Sunday morning before police caught up with them.

According to Nyeri Central OCPD Muinde Kioko, the suspect together with his accomplice were shot dead as they attempted to flee the scene of the crime.

“The suspects were escaping but the two got shot in the chase, the rest escaped but we are still looking for them,” said Kioko.

He added that the escapees sped off on a motorcycle.

Local businessmen, however, claim the gang has been robbing businesses in the area, adding that the situation forced traders to close their shops earlier.

“I have never conducted my business in peace. You cannot be investing in something and they keep stealing your items, you just want to close your business and go home,” said Margaret Muthoni, a trader in the area.

The police are still searching for the three who escaped.
