Ex-PS Kirui, former Town Clerk Gakuo jailed for 3 yrs over Mavoko scam

Former PS Sammy Kirui and ex-Nairobi Town Clerk John Gakuo have been sentenced to three years in jail over the Mavoko land scandal.

Gakuo, who had been proposed to replace Polycarp Igathe as Nairobi Deputy Governor, was also fined Ksh.1 million alongside Kirui.

In the ruling, Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Douglas Ogoti also handed former county legal adviser Mary Ngeche Ng’ethe a three-year sentence.

They are accused of fraudulently purchasing the Mavoko cemetery land at an inflated price of Ksh. 283million.

Ms. Ng’ethe will also be required to pay Ksh. 52million while Alexander Musanga, chairperson of the Tender Evaluation Committee, will part with a mandatory fine of Ksh. 32 million.

The court ruled that they are the only ones who were responsible at the time and their actions led to the loss of taxpayers money.

“All the accused were persons of authority and acted perversely and allowed corruption to take place when they could have stopped it,” the ruling reads in part.
