Expect full wrath of the law if you break the law, government warns NASA

The government on Thursday warned the National Super Alliance (NASA) against holding any meetings or events that are unlawful.

Speaking at KICC, Nairobi, government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe insisted that the opposition coalition should ensure that any activity they embark on is constitutional and contrary to that, they should expect the full wrath of the law.

This comes amid rumors from several NASA officials and elected leaders that when President Kenyatta will be sworn-in next Tuesday, the opposition will also be swearing-in Raila Odinga as president.

People’s assembly

The government also said that NASA’s push for People’s Assembly is unconstitutional, disregard to the rule of law and a subversive ambition.

The Jubilee administration insisted that the constitution provides for the function of devolution, devolved units and their legitimate business, saying that it is a mockery of the law of the land for MCAs in some counties to vote for civil disobedience.

According to the government, NASA is currently pursuing an amorphous ambition that is not defined in the constitution, and it hopes that all the MCA’s who have passed the motion in their respective county assemblies be surcharged for misuse of public funds.

“It is my hope that those MCAs who wasted public resources to pass those motions would be surcharged for using public resources for private activities. Your freedom of assembly is in the constitution. You can sit with your friends anywhere and even declare yourself the Pope, but using public resources to pass things which are not covered anywhere will not be allowed,” said Kiraithe.

Jubilee’s ignorance

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, in a quick rejoinder laughed-off the government’s claims, insisting that county assemblies have powers to legislate and represent people in various aspects of aspects including the ‘people’s assembly’.

The lawmaker, while speaking on Citizen Extra, said it is height of ignorance on the part of the government to lay such claims.
