Facebook and Instagram down globally

Social networking sites Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday went down across the world.

Online users on Wednesday evening took to Twitter to post error messages displayed by the two sites upon attempting entry.

According to reports from international media outlets, Facebook first went down in the United States on Wednesday morning before spreading on to Europe and the rest of the world by evening.

Users who tried to log into the Mark Zuckerberg-led application were greeted by the message: “Facebook Will Be Back Soon. Facebook is down for required maintenance right now, but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes.”

Facebook — the parent company of the two sites — issued a statement via Twitter stating: “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing the Facebook family of apps. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”

It further explained that the hitch was not due to a cyber-attack.

“We’re focused on working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but can confirm that the issue is not related to a DDoS attack,” said Facebook.
