Faces drop at Democratic watch party in Washington D.C.

Democrats at a watch party in Washington say they are in disbelief by the results of the 2016 presidential election.

Republican Donald Trump edged closer to winning the White House with a series of shocking wins in battleground states such as Florida and Ohio on Tuesday (November 8), rattling world markets that had counted on Democrat Hillary Clinton defeating the political outsider.

As the results rolled in, the faces of hundreds of Democrats dropped at the WeWork Election Night Party at the National Building Museum.

“Oh my God, I was so excited about tonight. So excited. I feel like every poll, every indication said this was going to be a great night, a historic night for women, for America and it’s just not the case,” said Washington resident Meredith Baker.

Ivuka Onwukwe said she was in shock but was maintaining a positive vision for the country.

“We’ve come through wars- World War I, World War II, the revolutionary war, the Korean war, all the way through segregation and the civil rights movement and we always found our way back to each other and what really matters at heart. So I really think that America- overall at the end of the day I feel fearful and apprehensive but at the end of the day still hopeful,” said Ivuka.

The U.S. dollar sank and stocks plummeted in market mayhem on Wednesday as investors faced up to a shock win for Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election that could upend the global political order.

Trevor Jones said he was overly optimistic coming into the watch party, only to feel the disappointment hours later.

“I thought that we were going to do a little bit better as the Democratic party on a platform of values and helping people that were different than us. But I don’t think that’s what we came out with,” said Jones.

Lights came on at the watch party before Trump was called the winner.
