Fake gold now impounded at Barclays Bank

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have impounded fake gold in the same safe deposit box at Barclays Bank’s Queensway branch in Nairobi where Ksh.2.6 billion in fake currency was recovered.

The operation, led by DCI boss George Kinoti, also saw the four key suspects brought back to the scene and questioned.

The second visit to the safe deposit box saw detectives call in the bomb disposal unit when they suspected a bag in the box was laden with explosives.

It, however, only turned out to be what the DCI says is fake gold that will be added to the exhibit already impounded from the safe.

This even as two businessmen reportedly recorded statements with the Flying Squad alleging that they were conned out of Ksh.5.5 million by the suspects.

Flying Squad boss Musa Yego further called on Kenyans who might have fallen victim to the suspects to record statements.

The suspects — Eric Adede, who was the registered owner of the safe deposit box, Ahmed Shah, who is alleged to have posed as a foreign investor, Elizabeth Muthoni and Irene Wairimu — will be arraigned on a miscellaneous application on Thursday.

Two bank employees earlier arrested will be witnesses in the case.
