Family holds prayers after son survives beach tragedy

The family of one of the survivors of the Diani Beach tragedy where seven students from St. Martins School Muranga perished last week held a thanks giving ceremony on Sunday after he escaped unhurt.

The family of Bruce Kimani Mwangi, 13, had a reason to be thankful after he narrated the ordeal on how he made his way out of the ocean after they were hit by heavy tides.

Mwangi said that he left his fellow schoolmates behind including those who drowned and made his way out of the ocean.

His father, a Member of County Assembly representing Biashara Ward in Kiambu, Kennedy Mwangi, however, faulted the teachers saying it was irresponsible for them to have left the students into the ocean despite having been warned by the beach attendants.

During the interdenominational prayers held in their home in Thika, the family had a moment of dedication conducted by church leaders and encouragement for Kimani who is set to sit for KCSE exams this year.

The seven St. Martins Primary School pupils drowned at a public beach in Diani, Kwale County, last week after they were overcome by tides during an academic tour.
