Murdered girl’s remains ‘still in pit latrine’ as family begs for justice

A family in Mbeere North are demanding for justice after their child and grandchild were brutally murdered allegedly by a General Service Unit (GSU) officer.

Despite the suspect being arrested, the family said local authorities are yet to file charges against him.

The remains of the two victims were disposed in a pit latrine close to a year ago but are yet to be recovered.

They are accusing the police of foul play and even claim that the officer’s family may have had influence on the matter.

The deceased’s mother, Mrs. Onorata Kanini, narrated how her daughter got into a relationship with Officer Edwin Mwenda who later impregnated her.

According to her, the officer’s family had been against the relationship because their daughter Pauline Kagendo, was a Form One Student and they did not want an ‘uneducated’ girl.

She noted that her daughter had given birth to a baby boy but later on informed them that the child had fallen sick.

On the day they were to go to hospital together, the daughter failed to appear and they did not hear from her for almost one month.

The mother indicated that they reported the matter to Ishiara Police Station but were not given an Observation Book (OB) number.

She said efforts to reach the GSU officer to inquire about their daughter’s whereabouts were met with hostility.

Ten months later, they discovered that the girl and her son were dead.

The family now claims that they have received death threats from the suspect who apparently comes from a wealthy family.

Stanley Mugambi, father to the deceased, lamented over the apparent lack of emergency in dealing with the matter.

He alleges that at one point police even chased him away from the station when he went to inquire about development of the case.

Mr. Mugambi further questioned why it took so long for the police to recover the remains of the two bodies were disposed in a pit latrine close to a year ago.

They are urging the office of the Director of Criminal Investigation and the Director of Public Prosectuion to intervene and hasten the process so that justice is served and they can bury the remains of their loved ones.

When contacted, Mbeere North DCI head Richard Mathenge, said they are waiting for experts from Nairobi to lead the operation to recover the remains.
