Family holds unusual funeral at a river in Sagana

A family in Mathira threw a bouquet of flowers into the Sagana river in remembrance of their son who drowned seven months ago.

The family was unable to retrieve the body despite multiple retrieval attempts.

Some family members who spoke to Inooro TV said the decision to toss the flowers was in order to give the family closure.

The deceased, a 20-year-old Bernard Muhoro accidentally fell off into a waterfall in Sagana after he slid from the river bedrock during a photo shoot.

Muhoro who had just sat for his KCSE  was in the company of his friends for a day of outdoor fun and merry-making.

Justus Kimunya,  the father to the deceased said that move to hold the memorial at the site where he drowned was reached after they gave up on searching for the body.

He expressed his disappointment with the government, saying it failed to help them retrieve the body after the accident.

More than 10 people have perished at the same sight over the years with locals saying visitors need to be supervised during their field excursions.
