World Food Day: Farmers encouraged to embrace technology

Farmers in Vihiga County were on Thursday urged to embrace technology as a way of redefining agribusiness.

Speaking to farmers during the marking of World Food Day, Vihiga County’s’s Agriculture Minister Pamela Kimwele told farmers that malnutrition can only be curbed through innovative farming methods.

“Youths are innovative and have the energy, I urge them to take advantage of the current funding from the Agricultural Sector Development Support Program (ASDSP) to expand their ventures,” said Kimwele.

ASDP in the county is currently at the sensitization stage on local vegetables, local chicken and dairy (cow milk) value chains.

“Food security is our Paramount concern as a department that is why we are keen on value chain specialization to enable farmers to diversify agribusiness “, said the minister.

On her part, Vihiga county’s Chief Officer for Agriculture Pamela Manila said Vihiga being a rural County has the potential to produce more food for local consumption.

“Currently we produce 60% of what is consumed in the County and we urge farmers to double their efforts for us to have a food sufficient County,” she added.

Farmers from different parts of the County exhibited various farm products and technologies.

This year’s theme: “Our Actions Are Our Future Healthy Diets For a Zero Hunger World” sought to challenge farmers to double their efforts to ensure Vihiga is a food secure County

World Food Day is a global celebration aimed at sensitizing people on the importance of food security. This year’s national celebrations were held in Makueni County.
