Farmers to Benefit from New Tannery

The leather industry in Kenya is set to benefit after construction of a tannery kicked off in Ewaso Ngiro, Narok County.

Livestock farmers within Narok, Nakuru, South Nyanza, Bomet, Kuria and also Tanzania will sell animal skins at the tannery in Ewaso Ngiro once the project is complete.

The project is funded by the government through the Ewaso Ngiro South Development Authority in partnership with the Leather Development Council, Kenya Investment Authority, Export Processing Zone and Ethiopia, who are the major competitors in the continent.

JOBS FOR COMMUNITY

Managing Director Ewaso Ngiro South Development Authority (ENSDA), Charles Sunkuli, said the project is expected to be completed in October at a cost of Sh350 million.

"This project will create 1600 jobs for the community and will be generating Sh8 million every year," he said.

Mr Sunkuli expressed optimism that tanning of raw lather could be a major contribution in the leather industry as shoes and other leather products would be made locally.

The MD noted that there is a lot of completion in countries such as Botswana, Ethiopia and South Africa but the incentive by the government to reduce tax by 40 percent on raw lather was a major boost for the economy.
