Nehemiah Asiero, who has been on the run for nearly a year after allegedly killing his 20-year-old son was arrested on Friday as he prepared to fly out.

The 45-year-old man is the main suspect in the murder of his son Byron Asiego who was killed in June 2020 at their home in Bomakombi village in Suneka area.

Nehemiah is said to have been on the radar of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for the last 10 months.

Detectives arrested him at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as he prepared to board a Qatar-bound flight.

The suspect was reported to have been hiding in Nakuru and Nairobi counties before his arrest.

According to Joel Asiago, the late Byron’s brother, their father had been intoxicated and in a foul mood on the fateful night.

The suspect allegedly demanded to know what his sons had brought home after a day out and Byron was apparently incensed by his father’s question and an argument ensued.

“Akaanza kusema ‘Kujeni nyote mlale… Aki ya nani damu yangu leo inawaka moto… Mmeanza kuwa wajinga sana… Hii ni boma yangu na hakuna kitu mnaweza nifanya …,” Joel told Citizen TV.

The father then allegedly rushed to a kitchen stand where utensils were kept and returned with a knife, ready to attack his two sons.

Joel said he ran for his dear life but Byron was not so lucky.

“Ndugu yangu alikuwa ameshikilia kimti fulani… Alikuwa ametoroka nacho ndio mwishowe nikaona amemdunga kisu…  Ndugu yangu akajaribu kutoroka akaslide akaanguka … Sijui kama alijua amemdunga kisu kwa sababu aliacha kumkimbisha… Me nikamwamsha tukafika kwa gate ndugu yangu atanitapikia damu …,” Joel said.

The suspect is said to have reported to have fled from the scene and went into hiding. Byron succumbed to his injuries.

“All I can say after niliona DCI ameshikwa somehow I felt at least finally justice is going to prevail,” said Stella Motari, the deceased’s mother.

“Ndugu yangu hakuwa mtu mbaya… Shida yake akilewa huwa anafukuza watu kutoka kwa compound yake,” said Evance Momanyi, the suspect’s brother.

Nehemiah, who is still being grilled by detectives over the murder of his son, will be arraigned in court next week.
