Fears of disease outbreak as 500 families displaced in Sondu

More than 500 families have been displaced from their homes after River Sondu Miriu broke its banks.

There are fears of disease outbreaks since most pit latrines too have been washed away.

Several houses, farms were destroyed following the flash floods as a result of the heavy rains upstream.

Locals now want the county and national government to intervene and support them.

A few schools have been affected too and learning interrupted as a result.

Locals are also complaining over high number of people and less resources at the evacuation centre.

Areas like Nyadina, Obange, Nyakod, Nyongonga and Nyawalao have been worst hit.

Teams from Kenya Red Cross visited the affected areas on Saturday morning to assess the situation and plan for humanitarian aid.

This comes as the Kenya Metrological Department say that the country should expect rain until the end of May.

Already several parts of the country have been affected by floods, with Tana River County being the most affected.
