Over 500,000 taxpayers benefit from KRA's amnesty programme

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) says over 500,000 taxpayers have benefited from the ongoing Tax Amnesty Programme, saying it has enabled individuals to rectify their tax compliance status.

Under the programme, taxpayers have settled overdue principal taxes totaling Ksh.20.8 billion, while self-disclosed unpaid taxes amounting to Ksh.28.7 billion.

According to KRA, it has waived penalties and interests totalling Ksh.244.7 billion for taxpayers who had previously defaulted on tax filing and payment.

KRA is urging more taxpayers to participate before the programme ends on June 30, 2024. Those who have not filed their returns or have accrued penalties and interest on unpaid taxes are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.

The Tax Amnesty Programme, introduced under the Finance Act, of 2023, allows taxpayers to receive amnesty on penalties and interest accrued up to December 31, 2022, upon full payment of their principal taxes by June 30, 2024.

" There will be no amnesty, waiver, or write-offs on penalties and interests after 30th June 2024," said KRA on Thursday.

"It's important to note that there will be no further amnesties or waivers after this date, and the programme does not apply to customs and import duties.

Overall, the Tax Amnesty Programme aims to boost compliance and revenue collection while providing relief to taxpayers facing tax disputes.
