Fifth suspect in Westgate attack still free, Court told

A fifth suspect in the Westgate attack is still at large, Criminal Analyst at the CID Headquarters Paul Mumu told a Nairobi court on Thursday.

In his testimony, Mumu said that police are yet to apprehend Abdikadir Mohammed, who reportedly hails from Mandera.

The suspect is said to have witnessed the purchase of a motor vehicle which was used by the attackers in the September 21, 2013 attack that left at least 67 people dead.

Mumo said that upon investigations he established that Mohammed was in communication with one of the accused persons charged before the court.

Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogembo heard that cell phones numbers of the four accused persons before the court were captured within the Westgate area before the Westgate Mall attack massacre.

“Adan Mohamed Abidkadir Adan phone contact was associated with the person who carried out the attack, “Mumo testified.

He noted that after the attack, Adan left Nairobi for Kakuma where he was arrested.

The four accused persons, Adan Mohamed Abidkadir Adan, Mohamed Ahmed Abdi, Liban Abdullah Omar and Hussein Hassan Mustafa have all pleaded not guilty to charges of supporting a terrorist group.

Over 40 witnesses have been lined up to testify in the trial against the accused persons.
