Fight against FGM, illicit brew gets boost

The fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kuria, Migori County got a major boost after sixty elders successfully completed an anti-FGM training.

Statistically, Kuria rhas been one of the regions worst affected by FGM and early marriage – vices that these elders have now vowed to combat.

The group will also champion the fight against consumption of local brew, locally as kangara, and second generation liquor.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the chief sponsor of the programme, Nyabuto Omare, expressed hope that the elders’ work will bear fruit.

Reformed illegal brewers graduate

200 former illegal brewers in Elgeyo Marakwet have graduated from a three-month rehabilitation programme.

The reformed brewers, who have now joined the fight against illicit brews, also took the opportunity to apologise to the community for their misdeeds.

The women, who had been deeply rooted in the illicit alcohol business, recounted their murky past.

The director and owner of the Ukweli Training Center, Samuel Teimuge, applauded the women’s passion, adding that they should go out and sensitise others against the vice.
