Fire destroys classrooms

Students from Chulaimbo Secondary School in Kisumu County are counting losses after a fire broke out in their school and engulfed classrooms destroying their belongings on Tuesday evening.

The fire is believed to have been ignited by an electric fault in one of the classes that was also being used as a storage facility for the students’ belongings.

The damaged goods included mattresses, suitcases and buckets.

According to one of the rescuers, Elijah Omondi, the fire which started in one classroom quickly spread to two other classes before being contained.

A total of three classes were affected by the fire with one burned down to ashes.

The Kisumu County fire brigade arrived at the school an hour after the fire started, and put out the fire.

Kisumu County Commissioner, Maalim Mohamed, confirmed that the damage caused was worth an estimated Ksh1.4 million as investigations are underway to find the cause of the fire.

Despite the disruption, the school still opened as scheduled on Wednesday January 4, 2017.

A security guard was the only person at the school at the time of the fire.
