Fire razes down two dormitories in Muranga

Property worth Ksh.5 million was destroyed after a fire razed down two dormitories at Michuki Technical Training Institute in Kangema, Murang’a County on Wednesday.

According to the institution’s principal Mr. John Gitonga Ndirangu, the fire started when they were holding prayers for Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) students who will write their exams on Wednesday.

Mr. Ndirangu says that it was during the prayer session they noticed smoke billowing from the dormitories which accommodate 72 students.

“We were praying when some students started screaming after noticing smoke billowing from the dormitories direction,” he said.

He however said that no student was injured as all of them were either in class or at the prayer session.

The principal thanked Murang’a County Fire Department for arriving at the scene on time.

Confirming the incidence Kangema Deputy County Commissioner William Lanaremo said that they have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire.

“The cause of the fire is still unknown. We have launched investigations to find out the cause of the fire. I also want to thank the students who helped in putting out the fire,” said Lanaremo

Kangema County Administrator Kuria Thuita said that he will engage with Murang’a County government officials on how to assist the institution construct other dormitories.
