First batch of August 8 election ballot papers arrive

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has received the first batch of the ballot papers to be used in next month’s General Election from Dubai-based printing firm, Al Ghurair.

Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Tuesday, July 18 evening after receiving the consignment, IEBC Vice Chairperson, Consolata Nkatha Bucha, confirmed that the electoral agency received a total of 243 pallets containing ballot papers for gubernatorial position for 40 counties.

“They are going straight into our Nairobi warehouse where they will remain under 24 hour police surveillance and in two or three days they will be dispatched to the respective counties,” said Ms. Bucha.

Among the counties that its ballot papers have arrived include Migori, Kisumu, Homa Bay and Bungoma with the seven remaining counties said to have pending cases of nomination exercise and therefore number of candidates and their parties still unclear.

IEBC will be receiving other ballot papers for the Senator, Women Representative and Member of County Assembly positions which were printed by the Dubai-based, Al Ghurair Printing Company Ltd in the course of the week.

The electoral commission suffered a major blow on July 7, 2017 after the High Court cancelled the presidential election ballot papers printing tender awarded to the Dubai firm.

In its ruling in the case filed by the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) seeking the cancellation citing conflict of interest from the Jubilee side, the court said that procurement process including public participation were disregarded by IEBC.
