First Lady in Ghana for Sexual Health and Rights Conference

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta arrived in Accra, Ghana Tuesday afternoon where she will join 12 other First Ladies attending the 7^th Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights.

The plane carrying the First Lady touched down at Kotoka International Airport shortly after 2.30PM (EAT) where she was received by senior government officials from Ghana and Kenya’s Acting High Commissioner to Abuja, Nigeria, Silas Kiragu also representing Ghana affairs.

The three-day conference, being hosted by the First Lady of Ghana, Dr. Nana Lordina Dramani Mahama, is part of the First Lady’s of Africa’s long-term commitments towards building and fostering continental dialogue on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The conference will be opened Wednesday by President John Dramani Mahama at the Ghana Conference Centre. The conference is being attended by First Ladies from 12 African countries and representatives from over 30 nations including Kenya, US, Portugal and several United Nations organizations.

The conference is organized by Curious Minds of Ghana-an organization of young advocates and youth broadcasting in collaboration with the office of the Ghana First Lady who is the current President of the Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA).

The conference is themed “Realizing Demographic Dividend in Africa: The critical importance of Adolescents and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights”.

During the conference, the First Ladies will, under the umbrella of OAFLA, launch a  United Continental “All-In” adolescent  HIV campaign .

Kenya is a signatory to the “All-In” global campaign which was launched President Uhuru Kenyatta in February, 2015, in Nairobi.

The campaign is a collaborative effort of OAFLA and the Global “All-in” partners such as UNICEF, UNFPA and UNAIDS to urge governments in Africa to prioritize and improve the provision of integrated HIV and Sexual Reproductive Health Services to adolescents between the ages of 10-19.
