First Lady Margaret Kenyatta has invited the new Indian High Commissioner to Kenya, Mrs Suchitra Durai, to participate in the First Lady’s half-marathon slated for March 6th this year.

The First Lady spoke when she held talks with the High Commissioner who paid her a courtesy call at State House, Nairobi.

The First Lady’s Half Marathon, in its 3rd year running, is a resource mobilization and public awareness activity for the Beyond Zero initiative of the First Lady.

The marathon has to date has raised funds to purchase 36 mobile clinics. This year the marathon hopes to attract over 70,000 children, women and men and will be flagged of at Nyayo Stadium.

“I wish to invite you and other Envoys to join me in the 3rd edition of the First Lady’s half Marathon.  As well, i invite a team from your Embassy to participate in the marathon,” she said.

The High Commissioner said her country appreciated the First Lady’s unswerving resolve to improve on the health of Kenyan women and children and will support her endeavours.

“What you are doing is commendable and has been recognized as a noble social transformative cause that has changed lives of Kenyan communities. She also said the Prime Minister of India shared similar sentiments. Let me assure you that we will support your efforts to save lives of mothers and children,” said Mrs. Durai.

The First Lady and the High Commissioner also discussed ways of partnering in the establishment of a ‘Beyond Zero’ state of the art hospital for women. The First Lady remarked that her dream was to set up a hospital to complement the mobile health clinics she is distributing to the counties.

The Indian High Commissioner also thanked the First Lady for officiating at the First World Yoga Day at the UN complex in Gigiri, Nairobi in June last year.

Yoga, a physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India was internationally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 11 December 2014 to be celebrated on 21 June of every year.
