First Lady Registers For Beyond Zero Half Marathon

The First Lady, who was launching the Beyond Zero Expo at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), aims at raising funds for the purchase of the remaining twenty seven mobile clinics after purchasing twenty, of which eighteen have already been handed over to counties.

In her remarks after registration, the First Lady called upon Kenyans to come out in large numbers and run, adding that with healthy mothers, “we will have a healthy nation.”

“I thank you all for your continued support towards Beyond Zero Campaign,” said the First Lady.

According to the organizers, at least 7,000 participants have registered to take part in the marathon that will take place in a week's time. Notable individuals warming up for the First Lady Half Marathon are 100 members of the National Assembly and media personalities, led by Citzen TV’s Julie Gichuru and Janet Mbugua.

Unlike in previous marathons, participants in this edition of the Marathon will have race tags, fitted with RFID chips.

“With these RFID chip, we will avoid errors. We will also capture data accurately and determine the winners with accuracy,” said Peter Gacheru, an event organizer at the function.

Beyond Zero Foundation was formed in January 2014, to partner with the government in reducing maternal deaths and child mortality. The campaign by the First Lady has seen 20 counties receive mobile clinics, with 27 more to go.

According to research, more than 5,500 women die in Kenya annually because of preventable pregnancy-related complications while over 100,000 children below five years die before their 5th birthday.
