Fisherman dies after boat capsizes in the Indian Ocean

One person is reported to have drowned in the Indian Ocean on Sunday after a fishing expedition turned tragic at Mayungu area near Malindi Town.

Bidii Katana Shombo, 39, who was a renowned diver, had reportedly gone fishing alone in the morning when tragedy struck while at the deep sea waters and his boat capsized.

According to witnesses, Shombo’s canoe was spotted with fish and fishing gear together with his shoes near the shore after which a group of fishermen and locals begun search efforts.

Speaking to journalists at Malindi sub County Hospital Mortuary, Hashim Mahabub, who was with the deceased in the morning before he left for fishing, said he helped him prepare fishing traps then left him to go alone as he was not feeling well.

Mahabub who says he was trained by Shombo in fishing also revealed that the deceased had hinted his intention to work hard to get Sh5000 to pay a chama contribution so as to get a loan that will help him clear school fees for his child.

The body of the deceased was recovered near the Kenya Navy Base.

His body remains at the Malindi sub county hospital mortuary as his family plan for burial.
