Fisherman drowns, two survive after boat capsizes in Migori

The search for the body of a 23-year-old fisherman who drowned on Saturday evening after the boat he was sailing in capsized at Kimamba beach in Nyatike Sub- County resumed on Sunday morning.

Olweya Odira, was on a fishing expedition together with other two fishermen when the boat capsized after it was hit by heavy tides at Kimamba beach in North Kadem ward, Migori County.

North Kadem beach management unit secretary John Wenje said the deceased who was allegedly drunk, drowned while other two colleagues identified as Alego Tisa and Okumu Magang managed to swim to safety and hence survived.

“We have been camping at the beach since yesterday evening when the incident occurred trying to retrieve the body of the fisherman,” Mr Wenje said.

“We are appealing to the government and other nongovernmental organizations to help us retrieve the body of Odira,” Mr. Wenje added.

Mr. Wenje cautioned fishermen from doing their fishing activities while under influence of alcohol, noting that the deceased might have survived like his other two colleagues had he not been drunk.

He also urged fishermen to take extra caution when doing their fishing activities and avoid going to the waters when the tides are heavy.
