Fishing in Lake Victoria’s Siginga beach paralysed as floods submerge landing site
Fishing activities at Siginga beach in
Nyatike, Migori County have been paralysed after the landing site was submerged
in floods caused by backflow of water from Lake Victoria.
Sigiga Beach Management Unit
chairperson Oscar Kajimba on Sunday said the building housing the unit’s office
and other services at the beach had partly been destroyed by the floods.
Kajimba said the fishermen were forced
to look for a raised ground away from the beach to carry out other activities
like weighing the fish.
The BMU secretary said houses around
the beach had been submerged by the water from the lake, forcing the occupants
to seek refuge elsewhere.
He appealed to the government to support
them.
“Fishmongers are having challenges drying
sardine. They are incurring huge post-harvest losses caused by the bad weather,”
Kajimba said.
